Ahvenisto finals and Formula Ford season 2010

The Finnish Formula Ford Championships were settled at Ahvenisto Finals last weekend. Drama continued to the very end...

In Duratecs, Antti Buri had problems with his gear lever, and Saturday ended up as a weak race for him. Thus going into the final race Sunday it was still not sure he would take the title. On the other hand, Elmeri Ylitalo was unable to capitalize on Antti's mishaps on Saturday, and instead drivers like Sebastian Nummi got to shine. Jesse Anttila, driving outside the series, also showed good pace.

However, as Sunday came about, it was very clear that the LMS Racing prodigy was seriously in business. Having made a nightly repair of the gear lever (unusual fault, and also a bit tedious to repair if your joints are welded...;-), he was ready to race. Antti took comfortable win with 5s to spare over Jesse Anttila. Again, Elmeri Ylitalo was not able to seriously challenge him, and thus the final standings in the championships were clear. It was Antti Buri (Mygale SJ-08 with an 2010 upgrade) who took the championship title, and Elmeri Ylitalo (Van Diemen LA10) was equally clearly second. Miikka Mäkelä (Mtec 2010) managed to climb onto the third position after a season peppered with technical mishaps.

In Zetecs there was even more excitement. Zetec Masters leader Markus Ollila, after having been crashed out by Ville Kivinen in Botniaring, spun out in practice and was hit by an F3 and a Formula Renault, resulting in a totally damaged car. The expenses of this had the team tearing their hair out already, not to speak of the risk of actually losing the grip of the title. To the rescue came Team Mäkelä, who had a spare Zetec along. Thus Markus in the end was able to race, and with two comfortable seconds in both races got the Zetec Master title.

The weekend surprise, perhaps, was Sami Inkiläinen who joined with a Mygale SJ-99. The car is ex-Liljendal, and Inkiläinen has had it for a year now, so obviously it was in shape. Sami has a long history in go karts, Mini1000, and has also been driving FF Kents in the historic class. Thus he is no newbie, and Ahvenisto is very much his home track. This he also showed, with two comfortable wins in the weekends racing. Of course, as he was racing outside the series, he had no pressure to defend his position either.

Second place in the Zetec Masters series was pretty much Kristian Laine's to have. No one could challenge him, and his only change to get up to first was that Ollila would fail completely. No surprise then that we found Kristian second in the series, after a weekend of being fifth and third in racing.

Third place in the series was between Henri Höglund and myself. Henri had to get up on the podium to have a chance at third, and he started the weekend with a third place, me following at fourth. Sunday then set the scene - if Henri would win and I would be less than fourth he would have gotten the series third. This was not to be had, however, since Pinja Forsman had a DNF due to a mishap on the warm-up lap, and Tommi Leinonens car did not seem to be up to pace. Henri got a poor start trailing Milla Mäkelä for a few laps, but having passed her he started chasing the leaders. He had already passed Laine and Ollila (giving him first position points for the race, since Inkiläinen was outside the series) when disaster struck. Catching air over the hilltop, his car spun out and hit the wall which so many drivers have met. The story was thus over, although in practice it was over already at the start since I had a fairly easy job to cruise home fourth to begin with.

Zetec Masters 2010 thus ended with Markus Ollila (Van Diemen RF-00), Kristian Laine (Van Diemen RF-02) and Per Stenius (Van Diemen RF-02) taking the honors in this order.

Some people are still heading to the Formula Ford Festivals, unfortunately our team will this year stay at home with the season over. Good luck to all going to Brands, and we hope Antti also has a great finish in the British Championships. Apart from that, let's start preparing for an exciting 2011...!
